STUDENT LED ACTIVITIES

Bilkent Laboratory & International School supports a variety of extracurricular activities that reflect our school’s mission and vision. These activities offer developmentally appropriate learning experiences and opportunities for our students and complement the formal curriculum offered by our school.  The activities include:

MUNESCO

Being an affiliate of The Hague International Model United Nations (THIMUN) Program, Model United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (MUNESCO) is listed amongst the most prestigious conferences in Turkey and around the world. Every year the organizing team is preparing to host more than 500 participants all around Turkey and the world. Since 2003, MUNESCO continues to set high standards of excellence as it is the one only conference in the world that is modeled after UNESCO,  and continues to nurture the love of learning, debating, and universal understanding. This conference is an influential step in introducing the colorful world of politics and diplomacy to the adults of tomorrow, by enabling them to put themselves in the shoes of a diplomat: a regular delegate in the General Assembly, a judge or an advocate in the International Court of Justice, an ambassador or even a chair of a committee in the UNESCO conference. The primary purpose of our conference is to stimulate the processes of debating, lobbying, and producing beneficial resolutions as it is done in the UN and help students become better global citizens. Tedx

A TEDx event is a local gathering where live TED-like talks and videos previously recorded at TED conferences are shared with the community. TEDx events are fully planned and coordinated independently, on a community-by-community basis. At BLIS, as motivated, high achieving high schoolers we organize our own conference under the name TEDxYouth@BLIS.  Further details can be found on the website tedx.blisankara.org and on instagram @tedxblis. We hope to see everyone support and enjoy our upcoming event!

Stuco

A student council, often abbreviated as “stuco,” is a vital component of school governance, comprised of elected student representatives who advocate for their peers. Serving as the intermediary between students and school administrators, stuco members play a crucial role in shaping the school environment and fostering a sense of community. The council typically consists of elected officials, including a president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer, alongside grade-level or class representatives.

Stuco’s primary objectives encompass organizing and coordinating school events, fundraisers, and community service initiatives. These activities not only contribute to the overall school experience but also instill a sense of responsibility and leadership in the student body. Through regular meetings and open communication channels, student councils address concerns, propose ideas, and collaborate on decisions that impact the student community. Ultimately, stuco embodies the principles of democratic representation, empowering students to actively participate in the betterment of their educational institution.

J-Munesco

JMUNESCO is a conference that provides a much needed platform for middle school as well as high school students to debate upon global issues from the perspective of different countries.

JMUNESCO (Junior Model United Nations Economic and Social Council) is a dynamic and engaging platform that empowers middle and high school students to engage in meaningful debates on global issues. It provides a unique opportunity for students to step into the roles of diplomats and represent different countries in a simulated United Nations environment. This helps them develop key skills such as public speaking, critical thinking, and collaborative problem-solving.

The conference encourages students to think globally, act diplomatically, and embrace cultural diversity. Participants work together to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges, from human rights to environmental sustainability, fostering a generation of young leaders committed to making a difference.
