English
Information
The BLIS MS English program is about more than simply exposing students to different types of literature. Our program helps students to develop reading, writing, and speaking skills which have cross-curricular applications. Through the development of their analytical skills in our courses, students will be able to understand and write about a variety of topics. Not only will they learn how to effectively “read between the lines” for academic purposes, but they will also gain an appreciation for literature.
Overview
Middle School English Programme (Grades 5-8)
Cambridge Lower Secondary (Grades 5, 6, 7 and 8) Students follow the Cambridge Lower Secondary English curriculum, which is designed to build a strong foundation in linguistic and literary skills. This program focuses on developing learners who are confident and effective communicators. Through various genres of fiction and non-fiction, students improve their ability to analyze texts and refine their usage of both written and spoken English.
Key Objectives for Grades 5-8:
-
Critical Reading: Reading a diverse range of texts critically and using insights gained to inform and enhance their own creative and formal writing.
-
Appreciating Craft: Recognizing and appreciating how writers use specific language choices, structures, and forms to create meaning and evoke emotional responses.
-
Versatile Writing: Learning to adapt their writing style, tone, and vocabulary for different audiences and specific purposes.
IB MYP Integration (The Middle Years Programme) At BLIS, the Cambridge curriculum is seamlessly integrated with the IB MYP framework. This approach ensures that students do not just learn language in isolation but explore it through global contexts and inquiry-based learning.
-
Language and Literature: Students explore the crucial role language plays in communication and how it shapes our understanding of the world. They examine how context, text types, and literary forms affect meaning.
-
Media and Non-Literary Texts: In addition to classic and contemporary literature (novels, poems, plays), students also analyze non-literary texts such as advertisements, blogs, and digital media to become media-literate individuals.
-
Performance and Expression: Through oral presentations, debates, and dramatic performances, students bridge the gap between literary analysis and creative expression, developing the confidence needed for high school challenges.
