GEOGRAPHY 

For 9th and 10th grade classes, Geography lessons are taught 2 hours per week. 

Geography courses aim the following: 

  • Develop an understanding of the interrelationships between people, places, spaces and the environment
  • Develop a concern for human welfare and the quality of the environment, and an understanding of the need for planning and sustainable management
  • Appreciate the relevance of geography in analyzing contemporary issues and challenges, and develop a global perspective of diversity and change

 

GRADE 9-10 Geography Course Units:

Natural System( Ecosystem, Climate, Geology, Map- Plate Tectonics) -Human System  ( Population, Settlement and Migration) Globalization- Environment and Society

 

HISTORY

Grade 9 History

The ninth grade history class is taught two hours per week. In these lessons, the science of history, the birth of civilization, the primary civilizations, first Turkish states, Islamic history and civilization (until the 13th century) Turkish-Islamic states (10th to 13th centuries) and Turkish history are taught.

Grade 10 History

 In Grade 10 history classes, the world and the Ottoman Empire between the fourteenth and twentieth centuries is analyzed politically, socially, economically and culturally.

Grade 11 History

In this course, The political, economic and social life of the Ottoman Empire from the 16th century to the beginning of the 20th century and Europe and the Ottoman State in the Age of Change are covered. 

Grade 12 History

 In this course, the final eras of the Ottoman empire; the attempts to prevent its collapse; general situation of the Ottoman Empire and the World before and after World War I; the era and the revolution in Türkiye through Atatürk’s principles and ideas; the international relations of Türkiye during Atatürk’s era and the foreign policies are taught. 

The primary aims of this course are to enable students to appreciate history as a science, be interested in history, interpret the current political, social and cultural events they experience with respect to history, and to support them on their way to become interpreting, thinking and analyzing individuals.

PHILOSOPHY

For 10th and 11th grade classes, Philosophy lesson takes place 2 hours per week. In
philosophy lesson students can learn basic western philosophy and its thoughts. Also starting
from Socrates to positivism, all main philosophical problems are discussed. By the effect
participation of the students, some philosopher’s discussions and philosophic thoughts are
also discussed during the lessons. The students make 1 presentation for each term about the
topic they assigned. And they have 2 exams each semester.

ETHICS COURSE

The purpose of the ETHICS course;

  • To raise individuals who respect the Constitution, the Basic Law of National Education, the Republic, Atatürk’s Principles and Revolutions and School rules of the Turkish Republic
  • To raise individuals who know the importance of unity and solidarity and attach importance to ethical values,
  • To raise individuals who are respectful and tolerant of religion, language, race, gender, beliefs, traditions and customs,
  • Giving importance to interdisciplinary relations in religious education,
  • To ensure that students associate all the information they have learned and will learn with Mustafa

Kemal  Atatürk’ s saying: “It is not enough to just see the horizon, it is also necessary to see beyond the horizon.”,

  • To follow the agenda and developments in the world,
  • Approaching sources related to religion and beliefs from an academic perspective; highlighting common points in terms of ethical values,
  • To understand that religion and beliefs are not seen as areas that restrict people’s rights and freedom; on the contrary, to enable people to see it as a set of values that enable them to live in peace with each other.

IB TURKEY IN THE 20TH CENTURY 

 Turkish Social Studies is a School-Based Syllabus that was initially developed in 2000 by a
team of teachers from various schools as a multi-disciplinary offering based on the
requirements of the Turkish national curriculum for History, Geography and Sociology, and
incorporating an international perspective. The purpose was to offer a means of including a
nationally mandated requirement within the IB diploma program for Turkish schools.
